Higher Education Issues

There are many Higher Education issues which need to be resolved in order to continue and maintain educational standards for the future.

It seems today, that nearly everybody and everything has ‘issues’. Teenagers have ‘issues’, children have ‘issues’, criminals commit crimes because they have ‘issues’, animals have ‘issues’. There are ‘issues’ in the work place, ‘issues’ in government. ‘Issues’ seems to be one of the buzz words of the 21st century. Well then it will come as no surprise to learn that higher education has issues too, problems which must be faced and overcome in order to adequately continue further education of young people, the future generations and caretakers of our society.

Money Issues

Who doesn’t have money issues? Well, the credit crunch has hit campus, and it’s not just the students who are suffering. The costs of higher education have risen rapidly over the last few years, leading students to commit to larger and larger loans, but not all of the increases in costs were actually charged to the students. Very often, colleges and universities also took advantage of cheap loans with low interest rates, but the credit crunch has put paid to all that and the ‘gravy train’ has stopped. They are now finding themselves in the unfortunate situation of trying to pay off old expenses while also trying to attract new students for the future.

Whereas many economic downturns mean a boost in the demand for further education, many potential students are already in such financial difficulty that they cannot see there way clear to afford higher education, even if they wanted to. The best way to attract more students is to lower costs, but now on earth can this be achieved?

  • Student Services – On-campus student services costs have rocketed over the last few years, and now many of the clubs and organizations are having their funding reduced, some are having to stop altogether.
  • Departments – Some of the unorthodox fields of study which were started over the last 20 years or so are being phased out. If they haven’t achieved profitability, many of them simply have to go.
  • Faculty – Fewer professors are now being hired as tenure, with adjuncts teaching classes at a higher level. There is now more classroom instruction taking place than academic research, for financially motivated reasons.

Distance Learning

The many advantages for students of distance learning have seen an increase in the number of students enrolling on these courses, and a subsequent decrease in students who actually study on campus. Many of the Universities and Colleges now offer the exact same courses online, as a means of maintaining their numbers. Many students prefer online higher education partnerships because:

  • Many courses can be studied at your own pace, so it is possible to study around work or family commitments.
  • Geography – a great benefit of online learning is that you can study from anywhere and don’t have to choose a college or university within your area.
  • Price – Online study courses are generally a much cheaper option, an important consideration in these hard times
  • Work – Studying around work means that you don’t have to give up your present salary in order to further your education. This has made a big difference to many online students.
